M/A-COM Technology Solutions for Next Generation Internet

Headquartered in Lowell, Massachusetts, M/A-COM Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc. is a premier provider of high-performance analog radio frequency (RF), microwave, and millimeter wave products that support next-generation Internet and modern battlefield systems. Established in 1950 as Microwave Associates, M/A-COM got its start by supplying the US Army Signal Corps with magnetrons—high-powered vacuum tubes that generate microwaves.

In the Nineties, M/A-COM was acquired by Tyco Electronics. In 2008, Cobham plc purchased M/A-COM from Tyco for USD$425 million. In 2009, semiconductor entrepreneur John Ocampo obtained M/A-COM from Cobham plc. Today, M/A-COM produces solutions for a wide variety of markets, including aerospace and defense, automotive, broadcast video, medical, optical networking, surveillance, and telecommunications.

To meet the demanding conditions of the modern battlefield, M/A-COM’s diverse suite of RF products are built to last. The company utilizes high-volume, dual-use processes to fabricate military and space products: Si bipolar, LDMOS, and GaN power transistors; Si, GaAa AlGaAs, and HMIC diodes; GaAs MOSFET and pHMET-based MMICs; passive and active hybrid components; and hermetically-packaged printed circuit board-based assemblies and modules. M/A-COM products support numerous defense applications ranging from military telecommunications to radar and sensing to electronic warfare.

M/A-COM products are screened to the following requirements:

  • MIL-PRF-38534
  • MIL-PRF-19500
  • MIL-DTL-28837
  • MIL-STD-883
  • MIL-STD-750
  • MIL-STD-202

For avionics applications, M/A-COM’s high-power GaN (gallium nitride) power transistors provide great functionality via the benefits of GaN on SiC technology. They offer high-pulsed power operation up to 600-W for avionics purposes in the 960 – 1215 MHz and 1030 – 1090 MHz bands.

For communications in the battlefield, M/A-COM’s diode products offer the latest in broadband switching capability for front-end applications. The company’s power products ensure efficient amplification on hand-held and vehicle-mounted radio systems.

For radar purposes, M/A-COM engineers the best semiconductor technologies to cover the complete spectrum of radar applications—ranging from the most powerful GaN (gallium nitride) power transistors for civil air-traffic control to highly-integrated GaAs (gallium arsenide) multi-function MMICs (monolithic microwave integrated circuit) for military phase array radar.

Popular in the defense community, M/A-COM (in partnership with a handful of companies including Booz-Allen and Motorola) received a USD$1 billion firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for base radio systems from the US Army Communications-Electronics Command in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey in 2001.

For the fiscal year 203, M/A-COM reported USD$318.7 million in revenues. The company is certified to ISO 9001 international quality standards and ISO 14001 environmental management standards. Today, M/A-COM offers thirty-eight product lines encompassing more than 3,000 products.
